Temecula Event at the Old Town Theater
The Harlem (String) Quartet

by Sherry Williams
(Temecula, CA. USA)

Harlem Quartet

Harlem Quartet

May 24, 2008.
Jazzers,
I know that most people enjoy many types of music. I also know that most jazzers enjoy classical music. Believe it or not, both genres have much in common.

That explains why (other than the opportunity to say hello and wish you the best) I want to tell you about an upcoming Temecula event - a concert this weekend. When I heard this quartet I immediately bought two of their CDs. They are outstanding.
Go hear them and then fall into Frankie's afterwards to have a nightcap and see me!

The Harlem Quartet, comprising First-Place Laureates of the Sphinx Competition presented by Chase, has a unique and challenging mission: to advance diversity and presentation of varied repertoire, highlighting works by minority composers.

The Harlem Quartet made their acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut in the fall of 2006 earning rave reviews from the New York Times. A month later they debuted at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, this time with a well received performance of Wynton Marsalis' At the Octoroon Balls.

Saturday night they will be playing
Mozart: Quartet in C Major "Dissonance" (four movements)
Marsalis: Quartet No.1 At The Octoroon Balls (four movements)
Strayhorn: "Take the 'A' Train" (Duke Ellington's theme song)
Gavilan: Mi Menor Conga

Harlem Quartet members are:

Ilmar Gavilan, violin
Melissa Whire, violin
Juan-Miguel Hernandez, viola
Desmond Neysmith, cello

In addition to being avid chamber musicians, each member is a seasoned solo artist, having appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Sinaloa de las Artes and Baltimore Symphonies and the Boston Pops among others.
